Autograph account book, 1819-1870.

The account book provides a mostly chonological record of books and manuscripts purchased, household expenses, payments to dealers and auctioneers, printing expenses, and the purchase of Thirlestaine House and other properties with notes about the rents and taxes. Books and manuscripts are generally listed by date, price and occasionally include a short title. The accounts also list several purchases of Caslon type. Includes lists of catalogues printed at Middle Hill and the libraries to which they were presented. Some 21 loose papers are included with the account book, including a two-page autograph letter from Phillipps's son-in-law, James Orchard Halliwell Phillipps, to another son-in-law, John Fenwick, dating from 1877. Also: a four-page autograph letter from Phillipps to the editor of Debrett's Illustrated peerage that discusses the ancestry of the Phillipps family.

On inheriting his father's estate at Middle Hill in Worcestershire, Phillipps embarked on a career of collecting manuscripts and books. His collection of manuscripts eventually numbered over 60,000 items.
